lake purgatory

durango, COlorado

Lake Purgatory Residence is a 3,000 SF single-family mountain home located at 8,800 feet above sea level in the San Juan Mountain range of the Colorado Rockies. The 1.10 acre site, comprised of black granite outcroppings is heavily wooded with Douglas Fir, Pine and Aspen trees and high desert planting. Views of the Hermosa Cliffs to the west are the feature experience of the property. The building plan is organized orthogonally along the cardinal NSEW points promoting the greatest orientation for passive house design maximizing solar gain to the South, minimizing exposure to the North and reduced façade exposure to the East and West with floor to ceiling glass providing sunrise and sunset views. A bend in the plan gestures to the north-westward Hermosa Cliff’s view. Materials are comfortable in the mountain environment- coreten metal exterior wall panels and native stone comprise the exterior pallet with natural wood siding as the singular interior material cladding floor, walls and ceiling. Grid-tied solar, radiant heating, water well and septic system make this property virtually off-grid.
